The dairy-focused component of the Pastoral 21 research programme clearly demonstrated a range of options available for farmers to decrease nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) losses to water. This paper presents a series of key messages identified from the research programme. Although strategies for managing nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment will provide options for creating headroom in catchments, future research remains necessary to identify management systems and farming technologies that can enhance profitability without compromising the environmental gains achieved. The Pastoral 21 research programme, jointly funded by several organizations, aimed to deliver industry-accessible, adoptable systems-level solutions for profitably increasing production while minimizing environmental impacts. The study featured four demonstration farmlets differing in design and practices to test if modelled benefits regarding nutrient losses and profits could be realized. Various management tools were introduced to support these systems, illustrating the importance of targeting critical source areas for sediment and phosphorus reduction. This research encourages the adoption of innovative farming practices that not only enhance productivity but also safeguard water quality, addressing an urgent need in agricultural sustainability.
