Abstract

Language:

This study investigates the presence of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in various polymer types before extrusion, focusing on compliance with European Union (EU) low persistent organic pollutant (POP) concentration limits. The objective is to evaluate the potential of mixed engineering plastics (MEP) as a recycled product while ensuring they meet EU standards. We employed a methodology that involved creating three fractions of extruded polymer pellets through density separation, characterized for 28 legacy and novel BFRs using portable X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and mass spectrometry. Our results reveal that predominant BFRs in the waste were brominated diphenyl ether-209 (BDE-209) and tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBP-A), with concentrations reaching as high as 120,000 mg/kg. XRF indicated that 22% of MEP chips exceeded LPCL values incorrectly. The findings suggest significant potential for achieving compliance through improved management of polymer types prior to extrusion, with implications for the EU's recycling practices. Overall, the study highlights the technical challenges and opportunities in recycling electronics safely and effectively.
