Abstract

Language:

Bauxite is the main raw material in primary aluminum production, and its reactive silica content and mass ratio of Al2O3 to SiO2 (A/S) have a critical role in the economic viability of the Bayer process. This study investigates low-grade bauxite ore from Seydişehir (Konya, Turkey), containing 57.33% Al2O3 and 9.01% SiO2, with an A/S ratio of 6.36, to determine its modal mineralogy and mineral liberation concerning the removal of reactive silica by flotation. Mineralogical studies revealed that boehmite was the principal bauxite mineral, interlocked with clay minerals (kaolinite and illite), ferruginous minerals (hematite and goethite), and titanium-bearing minerals (e.g., rutile and ilmenite). Through reverse flotation of the ore, a high-grade bauxite concentrate was obtained with an A/S ratio of 8.54; however, the recovery of Al2O3 remained low at 42.87%. While the A/S rate achieved by flotation was adequate for the Bayer process, the low Al2O3 recovery was attributed to the complex mineralogy and poor mineral liberation. This indicates that effective separation of reactive silica by flotation is challenging due to the ore's intricate mineralogical composition.
