Ein traditionelles Ziel metallurgischer Prozesse besteht darin, die Gewinnung und Rückgewinnung von Metallen zu maximieren. In der Nichtfeilen-Metallurgie, besonders bei der Gewinnung von Zink, Blei, Kupfer und Nickel, sowie bei der Behandlung von Schlacken und Reststoffen, finden Elektrolichtbogenöfen (Submerged arc furnaces, SAF) eine ungeminderte Nachfrage. Die SMS group GmbH, Düsseldorf, entwickelt seit über einhundert Jahren Elektroofenkonzepte und hat diese in rund siebenhundert Projekten verwirklicht. In diesem Aufsatz werden verschiedene erforschte Anwendungsgebiete vorgestellt und erste Ergebnisse präsentiert. Der Fokus liegt auf der Rückgewinnung von Kobalt aus Kupferschlacken und der Gewinnung von Blei und Zink aus industriellen Blei­schlacken. Im Rahmen von 25 Versuchen wurden über 6 Tonnen Blei­schlacken behandelt, mit dem Ziel, eine Endschlacke mit Gehalten unter 0,1 Prozent Blei und 1 Prozent Zink zu erhalten. Die Ergebnisse belegen die Anwendbarkeit eines industriellen Prozesses und erweitern die Literatur zu diesem Thema.
