By the end of 2022, the south-eastern Copper Belt region of the Democratic Republic of Congo was host to over 40 copper solvent extraction sites. This research aimed to evaluate the applicability of high ketoxime extractant blends for improving copper solvent extraction efficiency. Laboratory extraction and strip isotherms were generated and analyzed using BASF Isocalc™ modeling software to assess their impact on key metallurgical performance indicators, specifically copper recovery and net transfer. The study found that pure ketoxime extractants exhibit lower strip points and decent loading capacities, making them effective when the pH of the pregnant leach solution approaches 2. The findings suggest that optimizing the ketoxime content in solvent extraction may enhance operational efficiency and contribute significantly to overall copper production in the region. Such advancements are crucial as the demand for copper continues to rise, driven by various industrial applications. Moreover, this study provides insights into the operation of various SX plants within the DRC, focusing on how to better balance reagent use against copper recovery rates.
