The increasing concerns regarding the transportation and smelting of copper sulphide concentrates with high impurity levels, particularly arsenic, have led to the emergence of new hydrometallurgical processes aimed at impurity removal rather than complete hydromet processing. This paper discusses the NONOX process, which utilizes a combination of copper metathesis and hydrothermal leach mechanisms to enhance the copper content while minimizing impurities from copper sulphide concentrates. The process involves reacting chalcopyrite and bornite with copper sulfate in a NONOX environment at high temperatures, yielding copper concentrates with a purity of 50-60%. Additionally, the study mentions the Toowong process under development by Core Resources as a complementary technology. Successful pilot and demonstration campaigns for the NONOX process are highlighted, particularly within the context of Oz Minerals' Carrapateena project, showcasing potential commercial applications in 2019. The motivation behind these advancements includes significant freight savings and constructing competitive market advantages in light of stringent environmental regulations. These developments may also provide opportunities for recovering valuable impurities, such as uranium, thereby enhancing the overall economic feasibility of hydrometallurgical processing in the copper industry.
