This document explores the economic analysis of rechargeable batteries, focusing on the justification for their higher initial cost compared to single-use battery technologies. The objective is to evaluate the total cost of ownership (TCO) over the complete life cycle of the application. The methodology involves comparing the initial purchase cost and maintenance costs of different battery technologies, highlighted through a case study of stationary storage for a domestic solar installation. The results indicate that, despite a higher upfront investment for lithium-ion technology, its significantly greater lifespan and higher number of usage cycles lead to a lower cost per kilowatt-hour (kWh) over time. Additionally, factors such as depth of discharge and replacement costs in remote applications were considered, demonstrating their impact on long-term profitability. This analysis reveals that investing in high-quality rechargeable batteries can be more economically viable in the long run, contradicting the perception that cheaper alternatives are more cost-effective. Overall, the financial benefits of rechargeable batteries become apparent when evaluating their lifecycle costs and total energy output. Nevertheless, careful management is crucial to maximize their lifespan and efficiency.
