Cleaner production is an industrial preventive strategy aimed at promoting environmental and human benefits by minimizing waste and resource consumption. This study specifically addresses the electroplating industry, known for its high water and metal usage, while dealing with hazardous waste that can lead to material loss. Several decades of discourse have surrounded the treatment of electroplating waste, leading to the exploration of membrane separation processes, including electrodialysis, to mitigate its environmental impact. A systematic review of existing literature was conducted to evaluate advancements in membrane separation technology as a cleaner production method within electroplating waste management. The review highlights the efficiency of electrodialysis in promoting water recycling and recovery of chemicals, while also acknowledging the significant challenges existing in system efficiency and cost reduction. The findings suggest that hybrid systems represent a promising future direction for cleaner production applications in the electroplating sector, underscoring the need for innovations that may enhance both operational effectiveness and sustainability in industrial practices.
