This study highlights the significance of chemical oxido-reduction reactions in wastewater treatment, particularly in biological oxidation processes aided by microorganisms for the degradation of organic compounds in water. Its primary aim was to investigate the conversion of hazardous pollutants, specifically hexavalent chromium, into less toxic forms during wastewater treatment. Using an innovative IC 14D system, we experimented with wastewater originating from electroplating facilities known for high hexavalent chromium concentrations. Initially, hexavalent chromium was reduced to trivalent chromium employing sodium metabisulfite as the oxidizing agent. Following the reduction, the trivalent chromium was precipitated as Cr(OH)3 through an alkaline medium, enabling subsequent removal of contaminants after sedimentation. The results indicate that the treated water met safety standards, affirming its potential for discharge into receiving waters without harm. This research not only emphasizes the effectiveness of redox reactions in pollutant mitigation but also contributes to advancements in wastewater management technologies.
