A constant worldwide growing load stress over a power system compelled the practice of reactive power injection to ensure an efficient power network. For this purpose, multiple technologies exist in the knowledge market, out of which this paper emphasizes the usage of the flexible alternating current transmission system (FACTS) and presents a comparative study of the static var compensator (SVC) with the static synchronous compensator (STATCOM). The research details the operational mechanisms, advantages, and disadvantages of both devices within the context of a real electric substation. The methodology involved analyzing performance metrics such as response time, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness of SVC and STATCOM technologies. Results demonstrate that while both devices are capable of providing reactive power support, STATCOM exhibits superior performance in terms of dynamic response and better voltage regulation under varying load conditions. This paper provides valuable insights for power system engineers and decision-makers in selecting appropriate reactive power compensation devices to enhance the reliability and efficiency of electrical networks.
