Abstract

Language:

In December 2005, the Murrin Murrin Joint Venture (MMJV) approved a 200,000 tpa heap leach demonstration plant, with engineering work starting in January 2006. This plant is designed to utilize stockpiled ore reject material known as ‘scats’ to extract nickel and cobalt. Limited production is anticipated by the end of 2006, allowing the company to explore and address various technical challenges in the upcoming 12 to 18 months, including evaluating the feasibility of scaling the heap leaching operation to commercial levels. Additionally, the MMJV plans to maintain a research and development initiative aimed at refining and broadening its heap leaching technologies. The history and recent advancements in the heap leaching of base and precious metals are discussed, particularly emphasizing its growing adoption due to technological breakthroughs over the years.
