Abstract

Language:

The heterogeneous reduction of arsenic (V) with sulphur dioxide (SO2) gas has been systematically investigated to understand the kinetics involved in the process. The primary objective of this study is to identify the rate-limiting homogeneous reactions between undissociated arsenic (V) species and undissociated sulphurous acid and bisulphite ions. A series of experiments were conducted to analyze the reaction rates at varying concentrations and flow rates of SO2, maintaining a consistent concentration in solution. The results indicate that the overall reaction rate is directly proportional to the partial pressure of SO2, while showing independence from the partial pressure of oxygen in the gas phase. The investigation also shows that the solubility of SO2 significantly impacts reaction kinetics, with the reaction rate appearing constant within a temperature range of 313-343 K. A general rate equation characterizing the dependency of arsenic (V) reduction on the reactants is provided, wherein the rate constants are functions of temperature. This comprehensive study adds valuable knowledge to the field of hydrometallurgy, specifically regarding the kinetics of arsenic reduction using SO2, highlighting the efficiency and conditions for maximizing arsenic trioxide production.
