Abstract

Language:

Acid mine drainage (AMD) is an important focus of environmental impact that supports the degradation of ecosystems globally. This study investigates the variations in pH, Electrical Conductivity, Total Acidity, and Sulphates due to AMD influences in the São Domingos mine, situated in the Portuguese Iberian Pyrite Belt, which is characterized by severe contamination. Data was collected during the rainy season from October to March 2017, capturing the responses of the Chança water dam to AMD-induced changes. The results highlight extreme values occurring at a specific site (PAT 7), attributed to the unique potential of sulfide-rich waste accumulations draining into the dam. Observations included significant water reactivity as demonstrated through physical-chemical parameters and notable mineralogical indicators such as salt efflorescences. Correlations between the measured parameters indicate water-mineral interactions driven by the oxidative dissolution of sulfides, contributing to the generation of acid sulphate waters. This research aids in understanding AMD characteristics and their implications for water quality and ecosystem health.
