This study investigates alternative methods to mercury amalgamation for gold extraction in artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM). The objective is to identify and evaluate more environmentally-friendly techniques that can enhance gold recovery while reducing reliance on hazardous materials. The methodology involves processing ore samples using various techniques, including cyanidation and thiosulphate leaching, and comparing their effectiveness against traditional mercury amalgamation processes. Results demonstrate that approximately 100.7 grams of gold can be recovered per 3 tons of ore processed using the new methods, providing a benchmark for future research. The findings indicate that these alternative techniques offer viable solutions for improving gold extraction and addressing the environmental challenges associated with mercury use in ASGM. This research highlights the need for sustainable practices in the mining sector and suggests areas for further study to optimize gold recovery in a safer and more environmentally responsible manner.
