Abstract

Language:

Copper has been mined intermittently at Gunpowder, north of Mount Isa, since 1927. The objective of this study is to present the advancements and challenges related to copper leaching at the Gunpowder project. The methodology encompasses a review of processing routes including direct sale of high-grade ore, flotation of oxide and sulphide concentrates, and the production of copper cement from mine solutions. Notably, copper cathode is produced through heap and in-place leaching combined with solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX/EW). The results highlight that Aberfoyle Limited's recent acquisition of the Gunpowder operation led to an expansion of operations and the adoption of an innovative high recovery tank leaching process, utilizing a low temperature, low pressure autoclave. This development aims to produce copper cathode at an expanded solvent extraction/electrowinning plant with a capacity of approximately 45,000 tonnes per year. The integration of expanded throughput and high metal recoveries positions Gunpowder as a competitive player in copper production, despite historical fluctuations in market conditions.
