Pressure-driven membrane processes, including microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, and reverse osmosis, generate a significant amount of concentrated waste as a byproduct. This study addresses the challenges associated with the treatment and discharge of this concentrate, which is typically unsuitable for reuse without proper management. The primary objective is to explore various disposal and treatment options for the concentrate including reuse, contaminant removal, incineration, and safe discharge into surface and groundwater, as well as landfill disposal. A structured review of treatment methodologies is presented, alongside general guidelines tailored to the specific source and composition of the wastewater under treatment. The analysis further extends to four key application areas: the drinking water industry, leather production, landfill leachate processing, and textile effluent treatment. This research contributes to identifying effective strategies for managing membrane concentrate, thus enhancing the feasibility and sustainability of membrane technologies in diverse industrial contexts.
