The purpose of this research was to develop and test a transformational combustion technology for high temperature furnaces aimed at reducing energy consumption and emissions in manufacturing industries. This project, supported by the U.S. Department of Energy, involved a comprehensive evaluation of state-of-the-art burner technologies, including regenerative air-fuel and oxy-fuel burners, to achieve high efficiency and low NOx emissions. Methodologically, the project included detailed testing and comparison of these technologies, assessing their effectiveness in operational environments. Results indicated that the optimal configurations could significantly lower NOx emissions, thus enhancing compliance with environmental regulations and promoting sustainability in heavy industries. The findings underscore the potential for wide-scale adoption of advanced combustion technologies to improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon footprints across various manufacturing sectors. The work also established a foundation for further research into commercialization pathways for these innovative solutions.
