The second survey of global copper leaching operations has been completed, updating data published in 1998. A survey questionnaire was disseminated to 40 identified copper leach operations worldwide, focusing on those that participated in the 1998 survey. The paper presents results from 26 operations that responded, with selected information represented graphically. Historically, copper leaching began with rudimentary methods involving large stockpiles and unrefined techniques. However, advancements have led to a more controlled heap leaching process, which requires an interdisciplinary collaboration among geologists, mining engineers, and metallurgists. Key operational factors influencing the leaching process include climatic conditions, operational flexibility, quality control, ore characteristics, geology, mineralogy, reagent use, and methods for solution application, among others. Given the complexity and number of variables in heap leaching, optimizing leach recovery poses significant challenges. This survey not only updates essential operational parameters but also serves as a valuable benchmarking summary for the current state of the art across various sites.
