Abstract

Language:

Parts of a mechanical system or structure operating, or located, in corrosive environments get corroded gradually, leading to premature failure and increased servicing costs. Metal cladding is an economical solution widely used to protect components from these detrimental effects. This experimental investigation employs duplex stainless steel for cladding using the gas metal arc welding (GMAW) process. Tests were conducted on low alloy steel plates under various parametric combinations. Metallographic studies and corrosion tests were performed to assess changes in microstructure and corrosion behavior of the clad portion. The results indicated that at a welding voltage of 28 V, a weld current of 145 A, and a welding speed of 516 mm/min, the heat input of 0.38 kJ/mm resulted in the minimum corrosion rate. This parameter combination is recommended for cladding applications to enhance the service life of components subjected to similar corrosive conditions.
