This study investigates the efficacy of ferrous ions compared to ferric ions for leaching chalcopyrite in sulfuric acid solutions under ambient temperatures. Leaching experiments were conducted using highly pure chalcopyrite and varying concentrations of sulfuric acid with ferrous or ferric ions. Results indicate that ferrous ions significantly enhance chalcopyrite oxidation, leading to higher copper extraction compared to ferric ions. Furthermore, during the leaching process, extracted copper ions were found to catalyze the oxidation of ferrous ions to ferric ions, which in turn inhibited further copper extraction. This dual role suggests that the accumulation of ferric ions reduces leaching efficiency, and therefore, a strategy to minimize ferric formation is essential to optimize leaching rates. These findings highlight the importance of ferrous ions in promoting the leaching process of chalcopyrite and provide insights into potential improvements in hydrometallurgical techniques for copper extraction from chalcopyrite sources.
