Abstract

Language:

This study investigates the influence of flow periods on the release of uranium and trace elements from the waste rock pile of the La Commanderie Uranium mine in France. The objective is to understand the environmental implications of former mining activities, particularly their impact on local water quality. A combination of field sampling and laboratory analyses was employed to assess uranium concentrations and the presence of trace elements in water during varying flow conditions. Results indicate that seasonal variations in flow have significant effects on the concentration of radionuclides in adjacent waters. Specifically, elevated levels of uranium were observed during periods of high flow, likely due to increased leaching and mobilization processes. The findings highlight the need for continuous monitoring of water quality near former mining sites and suggest that environmental conditions play a crucial role in the bioavailability of hazardous elements. This research contributes to the understanding of the long-term environmental impacts of mining and emphasizes the importance of managing water resources in contaminated areas.
