This study investigates the leaching behaviour and physicochemical properties of cementitious nuclear wasteforms containing caesium and strontium waste simulants. The objective was to evaluate the performance of a cement wasteform consisting of a 9:1 blend of blast furnace slag and ordinary Portland cement, focusing on both non-loaded and waste-loaded samples with 3 wt-% caesium and strontium added as nitrates. Methodologically, the cement hydration phases in the samples were identified, and their porosity and microstructure were analyzed prior to leaching. The samples underwent leaching for a duration of up to 6 months, with quantification of the leached elements performed. Results indicated that in the waste-loaded cements, portlandite was absent, while the monosulphate AFm phase appeared to be altered through the incorporation of Sr(NO3)2. Additionally, the introduction of Cs and Sr led to an increase in the leach rate of Ca2+. This research contributes valuable insights into the behaviour of hazardous isotopes in cement-based wasteforms, highlighting critical aspects of their immobilization and stability.
