Abstract

Language:

This study investigates the operational efficiency of the Italian moka coffee pot, an ingenious device invented by Alfonso Bialetti in 1933 for brewing coffee. The primary objective of this research is to understand the underlying physics of the moka, particularly its use of the liquid-vapor equation of state and Darcy’s law of filtration. The methodology involves measuring the filtration coefficient of coffee and employing a steam engine model to estimate the efficiency of the coffee pot. Results reveal that the moka operates by utilizing the pressure from saturated vapor to drive water through ground coffee, with the steam temperature and pressure playing crucial roles in the brewing process. The findings also illustrate the efficiency of the moka compared to traditional methods of coffee preparation, highlighting its unique design features that contribute to its popularity. Ultimately, this research emphasizes both the scientific principles behind the moka's operation and its significance in coffee culture.
