The separation of the chemical and biological stages for enhanced kinetics by delegating the role of the bacteria to regenerating the leachant for selective dissolution of zinc from a copper-zinc sulphide concentrate was investigated. The process involves the use of an acidic ferric sulphate solution as a leaching agent which is continually regenerated by fixed populations of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans bacteria. Extraction of 80 wt% of the zinc and 22 wt% of the copper in the ore over a six hour period was achieved. A liquor suitable for zinc recovery and a copper concentrate, after solid sulphur and lead sulphate separation, were produced.
