Environmental desulphurization has been established as an alternative solution to control acid mine drainage due to the reactivity of sulphide tailings when exposed to open air conditions. This process reduces the amount of problematic tailings by concentrating the sulphide fraction. An acceptable target for sulphide content can be determined based on the acidity potential (AP), neutralization potential (NP), and net neutralization potential (NNP) of the mill tailings. The study focuses on the physicochemical properties of the pulp, which significantly affect non-selective sulphide flotation, the predominant method in previous studies. The depression of pyrite by lime addition during flotation is a major challenge. Laboratory tests conducted with a Denver cell aimed to optimize the selection of the most economical collector and frothing agent. The investigation included the analysis of pH and redox potentials, which are critical for flotation performance. Two mine tailings characterized by a low neutralization potential were studied, revealing that tailings L required more collector than tailings S. The desulphurization results were estimated at CNDS0.35 per ton of dry tailings, demonstrating competitiveness with existing tailings management methods.
