Neuropsychiatric symptoms significantly contribute to disability in dementia patients and escalate caregiver distress. This study aims to explore the neuropsychiatric manifestations in patients diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and varying subtypes of vascular dementia (VaD), specifically cortical and subcortical types. A total of consecutive dementia patients were assessed using the Neuropsychiatric Inventory, a standardized evaluation tool for neuropsychiatric symptoms. All participants underwent brain computed tomography, and dementia diagnoses were confirmed via clinical criteria alongside imaging findings. The study included only patients diagnosed with probable AD, subcortical VaD, or cortical VaD. It sought to elucidate the differences in neuropsychiatric profiles between AD and the subtypes of VaD, given the complexity of the associations among these conditions, particularly as prior research has yielded conflicting results regarding the prevalence and nature of these symptoms across dementia types. Understanding these distinctions is crucial, as they may inform treatment strategies and address caregiver concerns more effectively.
