Silk fibroin, derived from silkworms, has garnered significant attention for its potential applications in wound healing and skin regeneration due to its biocompatibility and mechanical properties. This review aims to explore the structural characteristics, properties, and biomedical applications of silk fibroin. Employing a comprehensive literature review methodology, various strategies and studies undertaken in recent decades are examined. The findings indicate that silk fibroin demonstrates excellent mechanical strength, biodegradability, and low immunogenicity, making it suitable for tissue engineering. Additionally, silk fibroin reportedly enhances wound healing by promoting cell proliferation and migration, essential for effective tissue regeneration. Recent advancements have led to the development of bioartificial skin grafts and bioactive wound dressings incorporating silk fibroin. The synthesis of different silk varieties, including sericin and recombinant silk materials, has further expanded the scope of silk-based products in biomedical fields. Overall, the review underscores the promising role of silk fibroin in addressing challenges in wound healing and skin regeneration, paving the way for innovative therapeutic applications.
