This paper discusses the current state of ferrochrome smelting capacity in Zimbabwe, which is dominated by four plants, with Zimbabwe Alloys and Zimasco accounting for over ninety percent of the country's capacity. Despite the presence of significant chrome ore reserves in both the Bushveld Igneous Complex and the Great Dyke, which should theoretically encourage investment, the sector has seen very limited financial commitment for expansions. An analysis reveals that, while ferrochromium production in Zimbabwe has experienced a modest ten percent increase over the past decade, investment in smelting capacity has remained almost stagnant. This contrasts sharply with South Africa's situation, where larger capacity smelters benefit from better technology, leading to nearly three-quarters of global ferrochromium production. The paper posits that economic analyses are needed to understand why Zimbabwe, possessing higher quality chrome ores, has failed to attract sufficient smelting capacity investments. In summary, the findings highlight the challenges facing the ferrochrome industry in Zimbabwe, including a misalignment between resource availability and technological advancements.
