Abstract

Language:

This thesis work concerns the importance of the cast surfaces, surface phenomena such as the formation of oscillation marks and exudation, and related defects including cracks and segregation that occur during continuous casting. All investigated materials were collected during plant trials while in-depth analyses on these materials were performed at the laboratory scale, supported by schematic and theoretical models. The work focuses on different material classes, such as steels and phosphor bronzes, emphasizing surface defects and their improvements. Metallographic investigations were performed on the surfaces of three steel grades, including Incoloy alloy 825, 4HSL64, and 82700. Incoloy alloy 825 primarily solidifies to austenite, while the other grades exhibit peritectic reactions/transformation. Samples from Incoloy alloy 825 and 4HSL64 were taken from the surface of continuously cast blooms, while 82700 was produced as a continuously cast slab. Sampling occurred at various locations across the width of the strand under typical casting conditions. The microscopic analysis involved evaluating marks within 250 mm lengths of the materials along the casting direction.
