This paper discusses the advancements and applications of solar thermal power plants, which utilize large mirror fields to concentrate incoming solar radiation towards absorbers. The objective is to explore various concentrating technologies, including parabolic troughs, central receivers, and parabolic dishes, and their potential contributions to renewable energy supply. Methodologically, the paper outlines the operational principles of these technologies and their alignment with the European Commission's renewable energy strategies. Results indicate that these developments can significantly enhance the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of solar energy systems, leading to a reduction in CO2 emissions and reliance on fossil fuels. The anticipated deployment of at least 1 GWe of these systems in Europe by 2010, through a targeted deployment of multiple solar thermal power plants, highlights the strategic importance of integrating these technologies into the broader energy framework. The paper concludes that solar thermal technologies are poised to play a crucial role in the transition towards sustainable energy solutions.
