Abstract

Language:

The study investigates the flow behavior in a continuous casting tundish as Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) explores increasing its capacity from 17 to 25 tonnes. The objective is to characterize various tundish configurations to identify the optimal design for enhanced operational capacity. A 3-D steady-state mathematical simulation was employed to analyze the flow profile of molten steel under both isothermal and non-isothermal conditions. Residence Time Distribution (RTD) curves were generated to assess the flow behavior within the tundish. The results indicate that distinct flow profiles emerge based on different tundish designs, enabling a detailed analysis of the operational dynamics of each configuration. The optimal tundish design was then determined, paving the way for further development in line with the operational requirements of larger casting capacities. This research emphasizes the importance of mathematical modeling in optimizing tundish performance, which ultimately contributes to improved casting quality and operational efficacy in steel production processes.
