Abstract

Language:

This chapter discusses the selection of chemical reagents for flotation, focusing on the advancement of predictive tools for engineering evaluation amidst the complexities of surface chemistry. Despite significant progress, the scientific considerations often overwhelm practical applications, leading engineers to rely on semi-empirical physical testing to assess reagent variations. The objective is to demonstrate the application of engineering models to laboratory flotation data, enhanced by subsequent plant testing. The methodology revolves around correlating physical test data to elucidate the effects of reagent types and concentrations, categorizing them into material property and kinetic effects. The findings indicate that while the reagent type can significantly influence the recovery of particles, the operational kinetics may remain stable unless extreme conditions are invoked. The chapter ultimately underscores the importance of applying a structured analytical approach in flotation processes, thereby enabling engineers to navigate the complexities of reagent selection effectively for economic viability.
