Abstract

Language:

The six platinum-group elements (PGE), including ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium, and platinum, are essential in various industrial applications, and their rising demand has led to increased exploration and mining activities. This paper aims to provide an overview of the processing of PGE ores, highlighting the complex issues involved. It covers the different types of PGE ores and discusses the mineralogical aspects affecting recovery. Furthermore, it examines the beneficiation processes currently in use, while discussing emerging trends that could influence the field. The extractive metallurgy section reviews both smelting operations and base metal refining techniques and introduces novel technologies being adopted in this sector. The authors strive to encapsulate a significant volume of work, knowing that details may be sacrificed for conciseness. Through comprehensive referencing and summarization, the paper seeks to offer insights into existing operations and the evolving landscape of PGE processing technologies.
