In the context of the potential health risks posed by high uranium content in phosphate rocks used for fertilizer production, this study aimed to determine uranium levels in samples from Kakul phosphate deposit, Abbotabad, Pakistan. Utilizing fission track and neutron activation analysis techniques, ten representative rock samples were collected and analyzed. Each sample was divided into three parts, with solid slabs and pellets subjected to fission track analysis, while the third part underwent neutron activation analysis for comparative purposes. The findings revealed an average uranium content of 37 ppm in the phosphate rocks, demonstrating a remarkable agreement in results with a discrepancy of only ±0.1% between the two methods. The reliability of the fission track analysis technique was established, highlighting its simplicity. Additionally, the uranium content in the Kakul deposits was found to fall within the permissible limits for mining and processing phosphate rocks intended for fertilizer production, suggesting a relatively low health risk associated with the use of these fertilizers. This research underscores the importance of monitoring uranium levels in agricultural materials to safeguard public health.
