The Pyrometallurgy Division at Mintek has established a strong international presence in developing applications of direct current (DC) arc furnace technology primarily for smelting various resources such as chromite and nickel laterite. This paper aims to present innovative laboratory and pilot testing methods that support the design of furnace containment systems, essential for managing process material flow and minimizing energy losses. The methodology involves initial desktop studies to select appropriate containment design philosophies, followed by laboratory and pilot-scale tests to validate these designs. By focusing on insulating and conductive lining designs, the study illuminates the critical role of refractory materials and chemical compatibility in furnace integrity under varying temperatures and material compositions. The findings reveal the necessity of conducting practical tests to reduce risks associated with the selection of design philosophies and components. Ultimately, this research emphasizes the importance of bridging laboratory knowledge with industrial applications to enhance the effectiveness of pyrometallurgical processes.
