During the manufacturing of welded structures, residual stresses are often present, and one common approach to mitigate these stresses is through Post-Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT). This study focuses on the PWHT of S690QL1 High Strength Steel (HSS), which, due to its production through a Quenching and Tempering (QT) process, presents challenges for effective heat treatment without compromising its mechanical properties. The research investigates the impact of different PWHT cycles on the microstructure and mechanical characteristics of S690QL1 welded joints. Specifically, the study analyzes X joint welded HSS steel plates, using slightly overmatching filler metal, subjected to four different PWHT cycles versus an initial As-Welded (AW) condition. The research methodology includes assessing how variations in process holding temperature affect material behaviors. The results indicate that appropriate selection of PWHT parameters can lead to significant reductions in residual stresses while maintaining satisfactory mechanical properties, thus providing valuable insights for better management of stress in high strength steel applications.
