This paper describes the various power theories for electrical power network solution and its mathematical approach in view of understanding the various apparent power calculations. These are necessary to evaluate the efficiency and performance of the transmission, distribution systems, and various electrical equipment. In order to compensate the load, it is required to know which components of the load power to be compensated. Under balanced and sinusoidal conditions, the power definitions and decompositions are well defined and are being practiced. However, in the case of non-ideal conditions, there is no common agreement about the decompositions of power and current. Hence, the power decompositions and theories for load compensation under non-ideal conditions have become an important research area. In this context, this article presents a review of the current literature regarding the different power definitions and their conceptualization under various source conditions.
