Synergistic solvent extraction of nickel and cobalt has been an important research subject since the 1960s. In recent years, several synergistic systems have been further developed for possible industrial application, including carboxylic acids/pyridinecarboxylates for the separation of nickel and calcium; carboxylic acids/α-hydroxyoxime systems for the separation of cobalt. This review summarizes recent developments in the field, focusing on various extraction systems, mechanisms involved, and potential improvements in extraction efficiency. The critical evaluation of different synergistic systems indicates that optimized conditions can enhance the selective extraction of metals from complex mixtures. The advancements discussed highlight the importance of understanding the chemical interactions for achieving better separation processes. Furthermore, the application of these innovative extraction methods has significant implications in the hydrometallurgical processes for recovering valuable metals from ores and waste materials, thereby contributing to sustainable resource management. Overall, the findings of this review underscore the ongoing advancements and future directions necessary for the effective use of synergistic solvent extraction in the metallurgical industry.
