The heap leaching operation serves as the metallurgical core of most copper oxide processing methods, yet fresh low-grade sulfide ores present a greater challenge. This paper aims to elucidate the factors influencing the success of heap leaching, emphasizing the critical need for comprehension of operational decisions and their downstream impact. Methodologically, the discussion includes recent advancements in understanding ore characteristics and outlines crucial determinants of heap leaching efficacy such as ore type, test work for process definition, and interpretative analysis of results. Moreover, it addresses operational considerations, including compliance with environmental regulations, drainage efficiency, heap saturation levels, and optimal irrigation strategies. The paper also explores the heap leaching of sulfide ores, particularly chalcopyrite, utilizing enhanced bacterial leaching techniques. The results indicate that effective heap leach operations hinge on the interplay between heap performance and fluid collection systems, rather than merely the processing plants themselves. Therefore, substantial lessons learned from various heap leach operations are detailed to highlight operational efficiency and cost-reduction strategies in the copper extraction industry.
