This chapter reviews the chemistry involved in the recovery of gold and silver from natural resources through hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processes. The objective is to provide a comprehensive overview of the methodologies, including cyanidation, activated carbon adsorption, carbon stripping, and electrowinning specific to gold and silver. The chapter discusses the application of zinc sodium sulfide for silver recovery from cyanide solutions, in addition to summarizing electrooxidation, various oxidation methods, and roasting processes for problematic ores and concentrates. Special focus is given to ores containing organic carbon and impurities, such as arsenic and antimony. Furthermore, the processes related to the smelting of cathodes, precipitates, and other products are reviewed, along with the various steps necessary for separating dore metal in both wet and furnace settings. The results highlight the significant industrial applications and considerations in the recovery methods used historically and in contemporary settings, thereby underscoring the importance of gold and silver for both economic and technological purposes.
