Sustainable Approaches for LD Slag Waste Management in Steel Industries: A Review

Waste management techniques such as reduce, reuse, and recycle are crucial for improving environmental and economic conditions in industries, particularly integrated steel industries that generate substantial amounts of steel slag as waste through processes like the Linz–Donawitz (LD) method. Existing disposal practices often lead to significant environmental issues due to unplanned dumping of these byproducts. This paper aims to review the generation, physicochemical, mineralogical, and geotechnical characteristics of LD slag and its potential for recycling and reuse. An assessment of the LD slag, which can contain valuable minerals, is imperative to identify suitable applications. The average generation rate of LD slag in Indian steel industries ranges from 150 to 200 kg per ton of crude steel production. These findings underscore the necessity of implementing sustainable approaches to manage LD slag waste effectively, thereby contributing to resource recovery and reducing the environmental impact of steel production. The review indicates that comprehensive characterization and evaluation are vital for optimizing the utilization of LD slag within various industrial contexts.
