Copper (Cu) has been recovered from speiss generated from top submerged lance furnace process; however, the leaching efficiency of Cu in sulfuric acid solution has been reported to decrease with increasing antimony (Sb) content in the speiss. This study investigates the hydrochloric acid leaching behaviors of copper and antimony, utilizing scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) to analyze the presence of CuSb alloy which may hinder Cu leaching. Experimental results revealed that the leaching efficiency of Cu improved with greater agitation speed, temperature, HCl concentration, and O2 introduction ratio, while revealing decreased pulp density. Specifically, the leaching efficiency of Cu exceeded 99% within 60 minutes at 600 rpm and 90 °C, using a 1 mol/L HCl solution with a pulp density of 10 g/L and 1000 cc/min of O2. Conversely, the leaching efficiency of Sb first increased and then decreased during 1 mol/L HCl tests, with precipitates identified as SbOCl or Sb2O3 through XRD analyses. Notably, in higher concentrations (2-5 mol/L HCl), the leaching efficiency of Sb stabilized over 95% (approximately 900 mg/L), indicating that higher HCl concentrations could effectively stabilize Sb ions in solution.
