This study addresses the increasing risk of urban inundation due to localized torrential rain, which is exacerbated by insufficient drainage capacity in sewer systems. The objective of this research is to develop a new grating with enhanced drainage capacity for road runoff. A series of experiments were conducted to evaluate the performance of the new design compared to conventional gratings. The results demonstrated that the integration of component members into the existing grating structure significantly improved its drainage capacity across various flow rates and road slopes. Flow visualization and velocity measurements indicated that the unique rectangular shape of the components effectively redirected the incoming flow downwards. Moreover, the observed decrease in flow velocity across the grating was not sufficient to account for the increase in drainage capacity, suggesting that the grating's design is critical in mitigating urban flooding. The findings indicate that strategic modifications in grating design can lead to improved drainage performance, which is essential for urban infrastructure resilience. Future work will explore the impacts of these modifications on clogging issues and overall effectiveness in real-world applications.
