Heap leaching has gained increasing attention in South Africa as more non-Witwatersrand gold deposits are explored. This interest was reflected in the attendance of 85 delegates at the SAIMM School on Heap Leaching held at Mintek from February 29 to March 3, 1988, which featured international participation. The lectures covered key topics including project evaluation, pad and heap construction, and treatment of various ore types commonly used in the United States. While the focus was on gold and silver leaching, the principles discussed are applicable to copper ores as well. Key challenges such as solution chemistry and scaling were highlighted, emphasizing the need for effective monitoring and management through the use of specialized sprinklers aimed at reducing losses. Guidelines for geotechnical surveys and liner designs for heap operations were presented, stressing their critical importance. Regulatory issues relevant to establishing heap leaching operations were also addressed, including multiple environmental legislations that might affect long-term site management due to retrospective application. Engaging discussions were noted, marking a notable improvement in participant interactions compared to previous events. This comprehensive overview aimed to equip delegates with essential knowledge to navigate the complexities of heap leaching in a semi-arid climate.
