Abstract

Language:

Tailings (flotation waste) formed during copper production can be viewed as valuable wastes due to their copper content. With decreasing grades in copper ores, utilizing these tailings as secondary sources has become economically and environmentally essential. This study examined the use of five different ammonia salts as leaching agents for selective copper extraction from tailings. The research focused on the effects of leaching temperature and time, testing various concentrations of ammonium hydroxide, ammonium carbonate, ammonium nitrate, ammonium chloride, and ammonium persulfate. The findings indicated that the copper extraction efficiencies for the salts were (NH4)2CO3 (73%) > (NH4)2S2O5 (69%) > NH4OH (64%) > NH4Cl (42%) > NH4NO3 (40%). The optimal leaching process resulted in a significant 91.47% copper recovery after 6 hours at 30 °C using a mixture of ammonia salts. Notably, iron was not transferred into the solution during the process. Overall, the results demonstrated that copper can be effectively and selectively recovered from tailings using ammonia salts.
