A significant contributor to higher energy costs and reduced energy efficiency is the reactive power demand on the grid. Inductive power demand reduces power factor, increases energy losses during transmission, limits capacity, and can lead to the need for additional generation resources. The objective of this thesis is to investigate the role of an energy management system (EMS) in mitigating the impacts of reactive power demand. The methodology employed includes a comprehensive analysis of the energy management strategies that can be applied to enhance power factor correction and optimize reactive power compensation. Results of the study indicate that implementing a well-structured EMS can significantly reduce energy losses associated with reactive power, improve overall energy efficiency, and decrease operational costs. Furthermore, specific energy management techniques are detailed, showing their effectiveness in maintaining grid stability and reliability while enhancing the economic performance of energy systems. This thesis contributes valuable insights into the design and implementation of EMS for reactive power compensation, which is critical for modern energy management and sustainable operation of electrical networks.
