Mining plays a pivotal role in driving economic development and providing essential raw materials, particularly in resource-rich nations such as Australia, Canada, and the United States, where it has historically fueled growth and industrialization. This overview examines the multifaceted impacts of mining, highlighting both its economic benefits, particularly in rural regions of Africa through artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM), and its significant environmental challenges. The generation of hazardous wastes during mining operations poses threats to public health and the environment, leading to contamination of air, soil, and water. Notably, issues such as Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) can critically affect downstream waterway utilization, adversely impacting irrigation and drinking water supplies. The toxicity of metals and metalloids associated with AMD can lead to detrimental effects on aquatic life, bioaccumulating in fish and crops, thus presenting concerns for human health through the food chain. This paper underscores the need for a balanced consideration of both the economic opportunities provided by mining and the imperative to mitigate its environmental repercussions.
