This work results from a contract between the University of Évora and the Votorantin-Metals company with the aim of identifying contaminant metals and their distribution in soils, water and sediments in the surrounding of a Zn-oxide plant. Between August and November we’ve done the first two sampling campaigns, the georeferencing or sampling points and the first tests of sediments thickness deposited along the streams that border the plant area. Preliminary data seems to indicate two types of contamination: by runoff followed by particles deposition on the surface and groundwater circulation and deposition of salts in depth, in saturated alluvial areas at shallow depth. In the next campaigns, the cartography of contaminated sediments will be complemented with the use of methods of geoelectrical prospecting on land and dred.
