Abstract

Language:

Cyanide has been widely used in several industrial applications such as electroplating, photography, metal processing, agriculture, food production, and the manufacture of organic chemicals, plastics, paints, and insecticides. Its strong affinity for metals like gold and silver makes cyanide suitable for the selective leaching of these metals from ores. However, due to its high toxicity, there is a critical need to regulate and minimize the discharge of cyanide into the environment. This chapter reviews current and emerging technologies aimed at reducing the concentration of cyanide and its compounds in wastewater generated from gold mining. Various methods utilizing physical, chemical, and biological processes have been developed to treat cyanide-laden wastewater to meet acceptable discharge limits established by environmental agencies. The review emphasizes the importance of effective wastewater treatment for protecting aquatic ecosystems and human health, highlighting the necessary technological advancements and regulatory frameworks required to mitigate cyanide's environmental impact.
