In-situ impedance spectroscopy has been employed to characterize pure and dense a-alumina (a-Al2O3) at elevated temperatures, examining the influence of electrode contact and leakage currents. The objective of this study was to understand the effects of these factors on measurements in the temperature range of 400–1000 °C, particularly in air and nitrogen atmospheres. A systematic examination was performed, revealing that while the influence of leakage currents was minimal at temperatures above 700 °C, it became significant at lower temperatures. As a response to the substantial surface leakage current observed, the implementation of a guard electrode was recommended to improve measurement accuracy. The study provides insights into the ionic transport properties and dielectric characteristics of a-alumina, which are essential for applications in high temperature corrosion protection of metallic materials. Overall, the findings underline the importance of considering electrode interactions and environmental conditions when performing electrical measurements on highly resistive oxides.
